Right now, as you read this, the International Space Station is somewhere over Earth, racing around the planet at 17,500 miles per hour, about 250 miles up, completing a full orbit roughly every 90 minutes. Here's the remarkable part: you don't need a telescope, a dark-sky site, or any equipment to see it. On the right night, the ISS is one of the brightest things in your sky — and it passes over most of the planet again and again.
What you're actually looking at
The station is about the size of a football field and is the largest structure humans have ever put in space. When sunlight catches its huge solar arrays, it can outshine every star and even rival the planet Venus.
