Here's the good news — almost every aircraft in the sky is constantly broadcasting its own identity, position, altitude and speed. With the right tool you can decode the plane above you in a matter of seconds.
How planes announce themselves
Most aircraft today carry a system called ADS-B — Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast. Several times a second, a plane uses its onboard GPS to broadcast exactly where it is, how high, how fast, and which aircraft it is. A network of ground receivers picks up those signals, which is how flight-tracking maps can show thousands of planes moving in real time. The plane over your house is, in effect, telling you who it is — you just need something listening.
How to identify the one overhead
Match the plane above you to the live map by its position, direction and altitude, and a whole story opens up. You can see its flight number and airline, where it took off and where it's landing, the aircraft type (a Boeing 737, an Airbus A320, a private jet), and its exact altitude and speed. That distant silver dot becomes "flight 482, a 787 from Chicago to London, climbing through 34,000 feet."

Why do so many planes fly over my house?
If it suddenly feels like there's a parade of jets over your roof, there's usually a simple reason. Airports funnel arriving and departing planes along fixed approach and departure corridors, and if you live under one, you'll see a steady stream. High above, aircraft follow invisible airways — highways in the sky — between cities. And when winds shift, airports flip the direction their runways operate, which can move the traffic right over you for a day. Busy jets stacking up in a circle? That's a holding pattern, where planes wait their turn to land.
What the lights mean
At night you can read a plane a little just from its lights: a steady red light on its left wing, green on its right, a white light at the tail, plus blinking white strobes and a red beacon. Those tell you which way it's flying and help you pick it out — then a quick look at the live map fills in the rest.
Quick answers
Why don't some planes show up? A few aircraft don't broadcast trackable ADS-B, and some — military flights and certain private jets that request privacy — have their details blocked or hidden.
How high do airliners usually cruise? Most jets cruise between about 30,000 and 40,000 feet. The live altitude readout tells you whether the plane overhead is climbing out, cruising, or on approach.
Can I identify military or private jets? Often yes — many still show their type and position — though some military and privacy-blocked flights will appear with limited or withheld details.
What are those white lines behind the plane? Contrails: trails of condensation and ice crystals that form in the cold air behind the engines. They say more about the humidity up high than about the plane itself.
