The August 12 total solar eclipse gets all the attention, but the narrow path of totality is only part of the story. Step outside that band and you're in partial-eclipse territory — where the Moon covers part of the Sun without blacking it out completely. And that zone is enormous.
Total vs. partial: the difference
Totality happens only inside a slim track crossing Arctic Russia, eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. Everywhere else within reach of the eclipse sees a partial event: a visible bite taken out of the Sun, deeper the closer you are to the central path. It's genuinely worth stepping outside for — just remember it never gets dark and it's never safe to look without protection.
Roughly who gets a partial eclipse
- Most of Europe — deeper coverage the further north and west you are.
- Western and northern Africa — a modest partial bite.
- Greenland and the North Atlantic — broad partial visibility around the central path.
- Far western Asia — a shallow partial near the edge.
How much of the Sun will be covered?
The single biggest factor is how close you are to the path of totality — coverage climbs steadily as you approach it. A city near the central track might see the Sun three-quarters hidden; one far to the south might see only a slim crescent bitten away. Local timing matters too: in some places the eclipse happens with the Sun low in the sky, so a clear horizon in the right direction makes all the difference.
Watching safely, wherever you are
This is the part people get wrong. Because a partial eclipse never fully covers the Sun, there is no safe moment to look with unprotected eyes — not even at maximum. Certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses are essential for the entire event, and any binoculars or cameras need a proper front-mounted solar filter.
Check the coverage and timing for your exact location ahead of the day. Even a partial eclipse is a striking thing to witness — and August 12 is the best chance much of the world will have for a while.
