Some of the most predictable events in crypto aren't news at all — they're written into the code years ahead of time. Token unlocks happen on fixed schedules, and August brings its usual run of them. If you follow the market, they're worth understanding.
What a token unlock actually is
When a project launches, it rarely releases all its tokens at once. Big chunks are set aside for the team, early investors, the foundation and community incentives — and locked, then released gradually over months or years on a "vesting schedule." An unlock is the moment a batch of those previously locked tokens becomes free to move, sell or stake.
Because the schedule is public and fixed, everyone can see an unlock coming. The interesting question is always the same: what happens when new supply meets existing demand?
Why they can move a price
Unlocks matter most when they're large relative to the tokens already circulating. A "cliff" unlock — a single big release on one date — can add meaningful new supply overnight, while "linear" unlocks drip tokens out continuously and tend to be less dramatic. Whether a price actually reacts depends on who's receiving the tokens and what they do next: long-term teams may hold, while early investors sitting on big gains may look to take some off the table.
What to check on any unlock
- Size: how big is the unlock versus the circulating supply?
- Type: a one-time cliff, or a gradual linear release?
- Recipient: team, investors, foundation or community?
- Timing: the exact date — and what the market already expects.
How to keep them on your radar
The key is not to be the last to know. Unlock calendars are public, so the edge is simply in watching them consistently — lining up the date, the size and the price action around it, rather than being surprised after the fact. Set alerts on the assets you hold or follow, and note the dates ahead of time so a scheduled event never looks like a shock.
Nothing here is financial advice — unlocks are one piece of context among many, and a scheduled release doesn't guarantee any particular price move. Always do your own research.
